A shrub is a bushy, woody stemmed plant that is generally less than 4 metres tall. Shrubs are like a smaller version of a tree, except instead of having one central, bare trunk, a shrub has multiple stems coming up from the ground or close to the ground. Some shrubs are also considered trees, so the line can be blurred here. The main thing that differentiates them are their shape: shrubs tend to have an overall roundish shape. This means that what you usually see of a shrub from all angles are its foliage and flowers, unless it loses its leaves in winter. You might also hear them referred to as bushes. As well as coming in many different colours, shrubs might have attractive flowers, fruit or bark. Shrubs have quite a few uses in the garden due to their range of sizes.
