Buy Weeping Japanese Maple Online
One of the most popular feature trees in the Melbourne garden is the Weeping Japanese Maple. Their delicate, colourful foliage and compact habit make them perfect for the small suburban garden. They are slow growing and require very little maintenance, making them an easy choice for any gardener. Many Japanese maples are considered dwarf in Australia as they don’t grow very big in our soils. In fact, there are dwarf Japanese maples available which only grow as big as 2m tall in their lifetime! This includes both upright and weeping dwarf Japanese maples, and they can be planted in both the garden or in pots.
Origin of Japanese Weeping Maples
Weeping Maples originated in Japan, where Buddhist monks collected wild maples from the forest that had beautiful colours and forms, and propagated them in the gardens of their monasteries. These maples were bred and developed over hundreds of years into the beautiful red-leafed maples that we know today. From the turn of the last century, shiploads of exotic plants were imported from Japan and planted into Melbourne gardens. Australian nurserymen have then carried on the tradition of propagating from these original plants, to create the Japanese weeping maple trees you see for sale today.
It takes years and expert skill to create a high quality, long-lived weeping Japanese maple tree. First, a strong, wild maple is grown to a certain size, which will form the base for the healthiest possible tree. Then, live plant material from the more delicate and beautiful weeping variety is attached to this tougher base plant, in a process known as grafting. They must grow together to become firmly attached and living as “one tree”, which is now far more hardy than the original. Only at this point is the plant ready for sale. As they are slow growing, when you see a mature weeping Japanese maple tree for sale in a large pot, it can be over 10 years old already.
