  Mop Tops are just about Melbourne’s most popular tree but up until now there has only been one type of Mop Top to choose from, as all the Mop Tops on the market are grafted Robinias. Grafted Robinia Mop Tops have fine dense green foliage, are extremely hardy and grow quickly to become a perfect ball on stick topiary style tree that's not too big.

But now if you want a Mop Top but want something a little more stylish or a little different to everyone else’s Mop Top there is a new type.

Designer Mop Top can be planted in confined areas

  The designer Mop Top Tree is of the Catalpa family. This is a larger leaved tree from the south of USA. The designer Mop Top is produced by grafting a compact dwarf-growing Catalpa onto the top of a tall straight trunk of seedling Catalpa the result is one of the most beautiful symmetrical compact trees you will ever see. The leaves are the size of a saucer and are an exquisite soft green. The leaves are tightly packed to form a thick spherical head on a strong thick trunk. The designer Mop has all the advantages of a traditional Mop, it can be planted in confined areas, it doesn’t need much trimming and has a clearly defined strong shape making it a striking landscape tool.

  Luckily they are not too expensive. We have currently available very advanced 12" pots $59.90 each. The designer Mop Top enjoys an open sunny position in well-drained soils. They are drought hardy. Do not plant them in swampy or excessively windy sites.
